What Is SGAP?
In 1957 Arthur Swalby called a meeting of anyone who would like to grow Australian plants; the response was overwhelming and the Society for Growing Australian Plants was born.
The Society for Growing Australian Plants is now an Australia-wide organisation of people striving to learn to know and grow our native plants and to promote and preserve Australia's unique flora. To this end, we grow our native plants in our own gardens, encourage their use in community areas, and learn to appreciate and conserve those still growing in their original environments.
The Society for Growing Australian Plants - Victoria Inc. is one of the autonomous state bodies which makes up this fellowship of enthusiasts. At local levels, members have formed District Groups for greater convenience and contact. These groups operate their own affairs under the SGAP Victoria umbrella. There are currently twenty-nine District Groups in Victoria, stretching from Bairnsdale in the east to Warrnambool in the west and Mildura and Albury in the north. New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia have groups that are run similarly.
Study Groups, which operate on a national basis, enable members to participate in gathering information on particular groups of plants.

Study Groups
Study Groups come under the umbrella of the ASGAP (Association of Societies for Growing Australian Plants Inc) because they operate Australia-wide with a Federal Coordinator. Their members are linked by correspondance and newsleters or reports. Some have meetings.
Many attractive native plants are unavailable to gardners because little is known of their requirements. Each group consists of a) active members who collect information and forward it to the leader for newsletters or reports; and b) passive members who receive newsletters but take no active part. Some Groups do not accept passive members and some have a waiting list. Membership is open to all financial members of SGAP Victoria Inc. (or other state SGAP groups) and you may join as many groups as you wish.
Active Study Groups vary from time to time. Following is a list of those operating in early 1995 - current listings and details of leaders and fees can be found in each SGAP Vic. Newsletter.
Groups include Acacia; Banksia; Blandfordia; Boronia and Allied Genera; Brachychiton and Allied Genera; Calectasia; Calothamnus and Allied Genera; Calytrix; Containers (Australian plants for); Cycad, Zamia & Palm; Correa; Daisy (The Australian); Dryandera; Epacris; Eremophila; Eucalyptus; Fern; Food Plants (Australian); Garden Design; Goodeniaceae; Grass & Sedge (Australian); Grevillea; Hakea; Hibbertia; Indigenous Orchids; Native Plant Regeneration; Prostanthera and Westringia; Rainforest; Rhamnaceae; Verticordia; Wallam (Coastal Heathland); Wildlife & Native Plants.
